Phakamani Foundation

a hand up, not a hand out

Phakamani Foundation is a non profit development micro lender. It lends money to extremely poor rural woman to start their own businesses. Phakamani empowers poor women to succeed at micro-enterprise.

"Our training, group loans, and on-going support lead to family income, savings, and hope for the next generation."

Since its inception in 2008, Phakamani has extended over 50,000 loans to Black woman micro-entrepreneurs. Following Grameen principles, Phakamani measures itself on the social impact of its loans. Bad debts are below 7% which means that the new businesses are able to repay their loans.

Phakamani employs more than 80 people and currently has in excess of 10,000 loans outstanding.

Mechanical Engineer - Senior Designer Engineer & Assistant Sales and Marketing Manager (Acting)

Lungiswa holds the following qualifications: Bachelor of Business Administration (Unisa); BTech Mechanical Engineering (Cape Peninsula University of Technology); National Diploma (Walter Sisulu University of Technology).

Lungiswa has been involved in the glass manufacturing industry, Rail industry and automotive industries since 2007 as a Design Engineer, Product Development Engineer and Acting Sales & Marketing Manager. Her work covers detailed design, 3D & 2D modelling, liaising with suppliers, creating prototypes, finite element analysis on complex designs, use of the VX element package to reverse engineer products, problem solving, shock absorber design , designing moulds including neck rings, blank moulds, train doors, train windows, sheet metal designs, stone guards, train partitions as well as fitments on vehicles and also the reduction of engine emissions, processing Requests For Quotation (RFQ) through Syspro, a process management system, attending to queries of the clients, participating in formulating and implementing the company's strategic plan, achieving monthly sales target by ensuring there are enough orders to meet the bottom line of the organisation, creating reports for (Executive) ExCo presented at the MANCO meetings, creating supply development plans (SDP) to clients, creating tender reviews, creating purchase orders, managing contracts.

She also looked at cost saving projects and is able to make an independent engineering judgement call. She performs failure investigations. She is self-driven, reliable, has the ability to pay attention to detail and a great team player. She is committed to delivering on contracted outputs and also has the ability to mentor younger designers. Lungiswa is able to manage projects that involve multiple tasks across numerous departments.
